Since November last year, the group have been mentored by professionals from the local business community during regular hourly sessions. The mentors have given students insights into the business world with a focus of understanding the skills needed and to raise aspirations.

In recognition of the student’s achievements and to mark the completion of the programme, the group attended a celebration event at South Essex College, Southend. During the day, our Year 9’s were joined by participants from local schools to listen to a motivational speaker and, to take part in an employability quiz to recap on what they have learned during the programme.

During the day, special individual awards were presented to 3 of our students. Stevie Jackson and Jessica King each received an award for their enthusiasm and work that the programme leaders felt stood out.

The top individual award went to Raheema Islam for her commitment and contribution. Upon receiving her award, Raheema was also presented with a brand new laptop; “I was extremely surprised when I received the laptop, I can now use it for project work and homework. The mentoring we received was very helpful and I learned a great deal.”

Jessica King, who received an Independent Achiever Award, also gained a lot from the project; “It has helped me understand what choices are available to me when I am older. I have also learned about people’s careers and have had the opportunity to listen to their different experiences. My mentor, Daisy, was really nice.” Speaking about the event, Jessica added; “It was great to visit South Essex College and to be recognised for my work on the project.
