Celebrating British Science Week

Last week, students across all year groups celebrated British Science Week with a variety of exciting, hands-on experiments and activities.

From making slime to testing the pH of acids and alkalis, and even crafting their own bath bombs; the week was packed with fun and discovery.

A highlight of the week was Wednesday's drop-down afternoon, where students took a break from their usual timetable to engage in science quizzes and explore the history of the universe. These sessions sparked curiosity and allowed students to deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Throughout the week, students also participated in a range of interesting scientific experiments, including:

  • Heart dissection – offering a closer look at the structure and function of the heart.
  • Can crushing gas pressure experiment - demonstrating the effects of pressure and temperature changes.
  • Flame testing – students identified different metals by observing the unique colours produced when they were burned.
  • Elephant Toothpaste -  students created an eruption of foam by rapidly breaking down hydrogen peroxide using yeast and warm water as a catalyst, showcasing the power of chemical reactions.

“I found Science Week very enjoyable because I learned new things in a really fun way.” Elizabeth.A -Year 9

“I enjoyed Science Week because we did lots of practical work, and I got to dissect a sheep's heart.” Praise.O – Year 9

“British Science Week was very fun, and I really enjoyed the experiments.”Alex.V – Year 9
